Physical Education


PE at Linton Heights aims to follow the National Curriculum objectives (see below). We have adopted a Sport for All approach which looks at the fundamental building blocks of physical activity as well as introducing new and exciting sports across all year groups. PE is taught a minimum of twice a week, shared between the class teacher and Mr Russell. 


In addition to PE lessons the school competes regularly in local tournaments and matches across a wide range of sports. Some examples from this term include: athletics, cricket,  netball,  tennis and gymnastics. 


To support the teaching of PE in school we offer a variety of after school clubs led by Mr Russell, Prestige Sports Development and external coaches.

Purpose of study


A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.




The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:


  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engage in competitive sports and activities

  • lead healthy, active lives.

We use the school swimming pool for the second half of the summer term and weather permitting the first half of the autumn term.


At the end of the 2021/2022 Academic Year our Year 6 children achieved the following results:


59 children could swim confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m. 

48 children could use a range of strokes effectively.

We did not carry out self-rescue in different water based situations so none of the children achieved this.
